Non ci sarebbe bisogno di aggiungere niente, le parole, pochissime, così dirette, bastano a fare di questa canzone un inno alla vita. “Tutti soffrono, tu non sei solo”, chiude un brano che ti colpisce in pieno petto, nonostante la voce di Bill Berry sia al tempo stesso così delicata. E’ per tutti, è universale, è piena di sofferenza, come un faro che illumina il dolore negli angoli del mondo. Perché non è sempre facile, non si trova sempre la forza per resistere, per ricostruire tutto da capo, per combattere un vuoto e tornare a riempirlo. Tutti soffrono e tutti a volte piangono, questa immagine riflette un mondo imperfetto, ma così realistico, così fragile, che non ha bisogno di maschere o di giustificazioni. Non importa il perché, nessuno te lo viene a chiedere. Ti basti sapere che non sei solo. Il videoclip mostra una strada trafficata, e nelle auto volti comuni dallo sguardo triste, bambini, adulti, anziani, chiusi nelle loro gabbie dalle portiere chiuse, e senza lacrime. Ma sul finire del brano quelle stesse persone si riversano sulla strada, sotto il cielo, e il canto intona “Hold on”, “Resisti”, perché ne vale la pena. Resisti perché la vita è bellissima, perché non devi affrontarla da solo, perché dopo una notte scura arriva sempre il sereno. Resisti perchè la vita è preziosa, ed è vero che a volte ti chiede di essere forte, ma sa anche darti le gioie più grandi, in un puzzle a cui mancano sempre dei pezzi. E’ una scena che ti travolge, perché la voce arriva dritta a colpire le tue emozioni, e nel mentre scorrono le immagini di una strada affollata, con le auto spente e infiniti piedi che inseguono la libertà.

“Everybody hurts”, uscita nel 1992, è un colosso che ha reso i R.E.M. noti a tutti. Una canzone che attraversa i tempi e si rivolge a chiunque apra il proprio cuore alla musica. Una canzone che non vuole insegnare niente, solo entrare in contatto con le persone, anime sconosciute, per dire loro che non sono da sole. Il cantante Bill Berry ha dichiarato:  “Non riesco a credere che sia la mia voce. È purissima. Questa canzone ha smesso immediatamente di appartenere a noi ed è diventata di tutti.” Ed è così. Un brano che è valso un encomio ufficiale da parte dello stato del Nevada per l’impegno nella prevenzione del suicidio. E se la musica può davvero parlare alle persone, questo è uno dei messaggi più importanti da diffondere.

It would not be necessary to add anything, the very few words so straight are enough to make this song a hymn to the life. “Everybody hurts, you’re not alone”, this ends a sing which hits you in your heart, althought Bill Berry’s voice seems so delicate at the same time. It’s for everyone, it’s universal, it’s full of suffering, as a lighthouse which enlighten the pain in the corners of the world. It’s not always easy, you are not always able to fine the strenght to hold on, to build everything again, to fight against an empty space and fill it a second time. Everybody suffer and sometimes cry, this picture reflects an imperfect world, but so realistic, so fragile, which doesn’t look for masks or escuses. It doesn’t matter why, no one will ask you. You just need to know you’re not alone. The videoclip shows a road stucked by the traffic, and inside the cars there are many common faces with a sad glance, children, adults, old people, trapped in their cages with the doors closed, and without tears. But at the end of the sond those same people run out on the road, under the sky, and their singing says “Hold on”, because it’s worth. Hold on because life is beautiful, because you don’t have to face it alone, because after a dark night it always clears up. Hold on because life is valuable, and it’s true that sometimes it expects you to be strong, but it also gives you the gratest delights, in a puzzle always undone. It’s a scene which overwhelms you, because the voice hits your emotions straight, and at the same time you see pictures of a busy road, with cars switched off and an infinite number of feet which are looking for freedom.

“Everybody hurts”, published in 1992, is a great song which made R.E.M. known worldwide. It’s a song which transcends time and talks to everybody who open their heart thowards music. It’s a song which doesn’t want to teach anything, it just want to get in touch with people, unkonwn souls, to tell them they’re not alone. The singer Bill Berry said: “I can’t believe that’s my voice. It’s so pure. This song has immediately ceased to belong to us and started to belong to everyone”. And it’s true. It’s a song which deserved an official commendation by the State of Nevada as a reward for the dedication in suicide prevention. Ad if music can really talk to people, this is one of the most important message to be spread.
