Ho un ricordo legato a questo brano risalente ai tempi delle scuole elementari. Era il saggio di Natale, e la maestra doveva decidere chi fosse in grado di cantare la strofa e chi solo il ritornello. In inglese ero peggio di una capra, e mi fu detto che avrei dovuto cantare quattro righe in totale, per la gioia mia e probabilmente anche dei presenti. Ma dopo le prime prove mi prese una gelosia esagerata per la ragazza studiosa e privilegiata che avrebbe cantato quasi da solista. Forse fu uno dei momenti in cui mi convinsi a studiare meglio l’inglese. La canzone ha origini statunitensi, è stata composta nel 1932, sul retro di una busta in un bar, da Haven Gillespie, e cantata per la prima volta nel Giorno del Ringraziamento del 1934 da Eddie Cantor, in una trasmissione radiofonica. La canzone non è altro che un monito ai bambini di non fare i cattivi, perché Babbo Natale sta arrivando in città, e può vedere e sentire tutto. È la nostra infanzia in una canzone.
